Since QGIS 2.18, there is a builtin functionality for basemaps which
offers many advantages, have a look here
https://gis.stackexchange.com/a/217670/9839 . If you want an easy to use
GUI tool to add a basemap using this functionality, best look into
QuickMapServices.
