The "Merge Selected Features" tool does not alter the geometries. I takes two or more geometries and combines them into a new single "multi" geometry. For example of you have two features in your layer that are two separate records and you merge them you'll now have just one record for that feature. Maybe you have a highway with two separated lanes and you want to both lanes show as separate lines but in the data you only want one record, then you would use the "Merge Selected Features" tool.
