No, I'd definitely want the latest stable kernel; just wasn't sure 
until you confirmed it that 2.2.17 was ready.

I checked out Debian.  Sounds like it could end up becoming a 
complicated hack though - all held together by bits of string and 
gaffer tape :). Remembering the pickle I used to get into with the 
early (1.x.y) Slackware releases, I think I would save myself a lot of 
stress by just getting the CD!  I checked the online order form which 
is in German - I could figure out most of it by context but I'd be 
happier ordering it by snailmail, in English (and paying in sterling if 
possible) :O)
