Tony, Scrub that, format ROM1_ has worked. The original format only took a second and caused the problems. This time it took a while ( hadn't crashed the Aurora) and appears to be ok now. sadly, that backup of ROM1_ i spoke about was to RAM1_ :-( , so it'll take me a while to get it back together but hey ho.

Format appeared to work as did the restore of backed up objects to rom1_ BUT when i reboot, it booted off WIN1_ not ROM1_ ( odd !) dir rom1_ gave lots of grey squares (# in example) i.e. ############# * -> ############# * -> ############# * -> etc. Performing further FORMAT ROM1_full locks up Aurora and after subsequent reboots DIR rom1_ gives Medium Check Failed. EX win1_progs_ROMD214_EXE gives TF Services RomDisq v2.14 (c)1997 TT message but sadly no joy with dir rom1_ etc. Any ideas gratefully received.
