Absolutely, this started off as one of those simple "I have been given an old PC, can i use it as a QL" type questions that seems to crop up all the time (the penalty of having a Reply Form on my website I suppose, although it makes a change from "do you want to buy my old QL?"). 6GB hard disk is more than enough for QLay I told him. Then he found he could get a 40GB hard disk for 25 pounds and so on, and the questions escalated exponentially, basically wanting to upgrade a free PC to use as a QL to the latest PC spec for nothing. So I got fed up of it last night and told him in my email not to bother me again with any further questions on this as I didn't have time to answer all the endless questions and lo and behold tonight I got a very nasty and rude email from him even though his lack of consideration for me and my time was what caused it all int he first place. Good job he's not on this list or I'd have asked Bruce to ban him. You try to help and that's the thanks you get. > The handling of large discs by older PC's is not just a factor of > MSDOS but > many BIOS had limitations, I recall one (686 500Mhz) that saw no > more than > 15gig untill an overlay was installed - fine for the space but some > MS > proceedures didn't like it much. In other words, it seems a matter of try it and see from what I've read here, as it may well vary from PC to PC, but there are ways forward and with luck the extra GB's can be used via partitioning if necessary. Thanks guys, guess we can close this thread now. -- Dilwyn Jones _______________________________________________ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
