To give M$ credit they are the market leader for PC's, so it up to competitors to be better or have a different appeal. At work ... a school ... we have a network of over 2000 users using M$ Windows XP Pro ... the general users are not known for there respect of systems or equipment. So, it gets a regular bashing from every direction, day in day out. I cannot recall the last time the network actually went down ... it is so long ago. On the other hand one the distinct advantages of using a system, like a QL system, is that there few people out there who understand it, so things like personal data and financial details can be kept on a machine with little likelihood of anyone else even being able to access it. I don't know if any the hackers out there in the internet universe know how to read and understand a WIN drive under a QL Emulator ? So, probably that is a more secure area on PC hard drive, than the other PC data >I know you're very keen on Windows, Roy, but you're missing the >point ... and this a point which applied (to some extent) to SMSQ. Of course it does the OS job ... it is the task of the application developers to adapt to new or revised systems. Yet, we ... in education ... get a lot of applications that have taken many many hours of development, for a low cost and some licensing costs. It is a "catch22" ... we have to prepare young people for the world of further study or for work ... where M$ dominates. At the same time we are actually teaching transferable skills ... so that in the future further adaption can be made. -- Malcolm Cadman _______________________________________________ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
