Interesting - printers were always a source of great unreliability for
me, the three great exceptions being a Centronics GLP2 dot matrix
printer from the 1980s which only got retired (given away in working
order) a few years ago, a Canon BJ10sx from the 1990s whcihis still in
working order, but it is hard to find ink cartridges for it, and the
ever faithful current Epson Stylus Colour 880, which also had a scare
with regard to cartridge availability, but "normal service" has been
resumed now.

One of my first printers was an Epson FX80. It gave good service for
years back in the 1980s. The Centronics GLP2 was a good little printer
(might be what the GLP stood for, you never know!) but rather slow,
especially in NLQ. The FX80 was faster, but no NLQ. The print head on
the FX80 died and I realised a new one was going to cost more than a
new printer, so for a couple of years it served me as a sort of
scanner (a Jurgen Falkenberg unit which clipped onto a print head and
relied on the printer's mechanics) until it eventually died a total
death. I've had various Star printers, from Gemini10x to my favourites
of the Star range, the LC10 and LC24, and all sorts of printers
really, some of which were very short lived. But I think the Stylus
880 has to be my favourite - USB and PAR, mono and colour ink
cartridges, fast, can be used with QL or PC (most of the time my
Aurora and PC remain connected to PAR and USB respectively and as long
as the two don't try to print at the same time it's surprisingly happy
with the two connected).

Given the amount of printing I do (listings mostly) I'm very surprised
at any printer that last me more than two years, so I think
Centronics, Canon and Epson can be rather proud of their little
printers!

Sadly, given how few printers there are with control code sets these
days, I'll be rather miffed when the Stylus Colour 880 bytes (sic.)
the dust.
