I have an espresso machine whose plug fused with the adaptor into which it was plugged. The smell of burning plastic while the coffee was being made alerted me to the trouble. It seems to me therefore that switching off at the wall will sometimes prevent conflagration - though it does stop computers running. That is the downside.
