What a con!
Next time this happens simply take out the hard disk and send it alone. 
  That is what I did with a HD in a Compaq laptop that was way out of 
guarantee and not a murmur.

Yep - that confirms I will *never* buy from Dell - they are crooks to 
take that attitude.
