This method does mean having two copies of each picture on the site - one reduced and cropped to 160x120px, with an embedded link to the original file.
I have implemented your previous suggestion of going via a thumbnail image and an HTML link. Using the Irfanview software.
I have made the Xmas Card at the bottom of the page a web link using the technique. The original image was at a very high resolution of over 4000 pixels in both height and width.
If you replace the text of the web link with a reduced copy of the picture you'll have what I mean.
