I have just tried programming this method. A user would click on the move icon at the bottom right corner of the window. There appears a small icon of three diagonal lines of decreasing size at the bottom right of a white outline surrounding the window. This outline can be altered in size by dragging the new icon. On releasing the mouse button the window becomes resized.

This method replaces the method using WM_CHWIN and does not take much programming,

Although I haven't tried it, I daresay that if the outline is a thin application window to the left and another above the icon you mention, it might be possible to click on this and to drag the outline horizontally or vertically (instead of diagonally). Additionally, if a different pointer (e.g. small double arrow) is defined for these thin windows the pointer could change as it moves into these windows.
