I am trying to use a QDOS formatted 1440 sector QL disk under
Qemulator.
Hi Tony, to use floppy disks reliably, please upgrade to Q-emuLator
2.5 (uninstall your current version from Control Panel, then install
2.5 from http://www.terdina.net/ql/winql.html, your existing
registration code will continue to work), it has very important fixes
related to floppy disks (a major bug was introduced after version
2.0, and fixed in 2.5).
If you still have problems or crashes with version 2.5, I'll be happy
to investigate.
In general, trying to format disks on the PC (with the emulator) like
you did is the recommended strategy... in my experience it's easier
for QL disk drives to read floppy disks freshly formatted on the PC
than it is for the PC drive to read old QL disks formatted by
Miracle/Cumana/etc. cards...
Yes I guessed that. It may simply be that the Miracle disks I have
are 720k, or only managing to format to 720k.
Will try the new version.
Success under 2.5.
As you say disks formatted under QDOS are (often?) not read properly by
Qemulator. I found they were recognised OK, but a DIR showed no files.
Many thanks.
I can now get on with an interesting job.
I was rung by Martin Biddle, a "Professor of mediaeval archaeology" at
Oxford. He does work with the Winchester Research Unit.
That rang a bell, and I found that I had repaired a QL in Nov 1988. It
was great to see the QL after 21 years, and all it needed was a kbd
membrane. He wants files transferred to PC format (8-(#
The QL had been used for many many years and there are maybe 80
cartridges to transfer.
Apparently the work is academically very important and there are no
other computer based backups.
The files seem to copy OK (format ram1_mdv1_ is the way) so far. I have
though to convert Quill files and export Abacus.
For .doc, last time I added a special character at the end of every
paragraph. I then made a printer driver as follows and printed to a file:
End of line -> SPACE
"Special character" -> CR/LF/CR/LF
£ -> chr 156
Anything else recommended? I cannot find the driver I made.
Thanks again Daniele. Qemulator has rescued some important work.
Tony
