the only thing missing was a decent display, after a bit of digging
around i thought i would email microvitec ([email protected]) to
ask them about the TTL compatible LCD units they have.
bad news: these go for over a grand.
good news: they still have a number of refurbished CUB monitors. i got
one of the original QL specific ones which is working perfectly for
£60, i couldn't afford one of these when i was young(er) so that made
my day.

Hi Fern,
I have several Microvitec monitors available.
They suit the QL and the BBC computers, and others, with the correct RGB
connection cable.
They are very well built - indestructible ... :-)
