Many of these problems with older XP-era apps can be traced to permissions.

Try assigning full permissions to the folder in which you install the
program and you _may_ find that all your difficulties go away.

As for the utterly absurd decision to implement a 32 bit program folder
called "Program Files (X86)" ... I can only wonder at the kind of twisted
mind that dreamed such a thing up. ;)
