Only 1TB? Surely you must have more than that! ;-)
Yes! Only 1TB on the old PC itself in its internal drives. My calculator
gives an overflow error when I try to work out the grand total including
everything else ;-)
I can see that turning off UAC would benefit in some ways, although I
don't mind being asked every time I start a program if it makes my
computing safer when something tries to write to somewhere it shouldn't.
Which will probably be every 32 bit application you use! You will get fed
up of it.
OK, that part I understand - decision deferred until I feel more confident.
If you want to use Windows, feel free and just ignore my ramblings. :-)
:-)
When I say "old hat" - I laughed at all the (expensive?) adverts for
Windows 7 saying that "you can save time by executing programs with one
click instead of two" and "when I move my window on screen, it jumps to
the edge when it gets close" and so on. That's the best that Windows 7 can
offer? Linux has been doing that (under KDE at least) since I first
started using it. Back in 2001.
Fair comment. I had something called Aquasnap on XP which let XP do some of
the things Win7 can do. But QPC2 and a few other programs left "footprints"
all over the screen as it moved around, so Aquasnap was of limited to use.
However, I'm man enough to agree that there are things it does better than
Linux. I mentioned the Blue Ray DVDs as one example. When I come up with
another, I'll let you know!
Might take you a long time though... :o)
I agree, Windows 7 is much better than XP. (Sound of crash from the
Dilwyn office there?) ;-)
C-R-A-S-H...ouch! Norman agreed with me on something?!?!?! ;-)
Don't I often agree with you? :-)
When we're not discussing Linux vs Windows, yes :o)
BTW, back to topic, amid all the winding up of Norman, I somehow got
QL2K working. Worst part is I don't know what I did, as it happened at a
step when I made 3 changes so I don't know which of them got it going.
If I may hazard a guess, did you set the permissions to allow all users
all access? That might have done it.
Err, not 100% sure of that. The 64-bit version shows the UNBLOCK button now,
so (admitting my lack of knowledge here) it is probably not unblocked. UAC
queries and if I allow it, it starts normally. Is this what you might
expect?
UAC still queries when it starts of course (I expect it's because QL2K
writes its log file in the Program Files folder as it starts.)
That's correct. Windows doesn't like you doing that any more.
Jimmy suggested installing in something like C:\jadiam.org\QL2K instead of
Program Files. Not sure if I need to do that any more as (whatever I might
have done and forgotten) it seems to start normally now.
Anyway, happy for the moment...
