Tim Swenson is correct.

Most Live CDs wiil boot up and automatically recognize the usb hard drive.

So first step is to download a live CD or rescue CD for Linux.

One question is how old is your windows computer?

Current live CDs may not work wit an old computer, but I may be able to
supply you with one which will.
