I've updated QStripper and have finally got around to uploading the binaries as opposed to the plain old source code.

The changes are simple:

* The help->About screen now displays a version number. The latest is version 1.01.

* The application can now open PC Quill as well as QL Quill documents.

Please note, however, until I get a definitive list, only some of the accented characters in the PC files will be translated. If anyone finds any that don't translate, let me know. I have managed to work out the PC versions of the following only:

a circumflex
a umlaut
a grave

c cedilla

e acute
e curcumflex
e umlaut
e grave

i umlaut
i circumflex

o circumflex
o umlaut

u umlaut
u curcumflex
u grave

If anyone has a list of the PC accented characters above CHR$(128) and the corresponding QL CHR$() that they translate to, I'd be grateful. It seems that the PC and the QL use a different character set in Quill docs.

There are now versions for Windows 64 bit, Windows 32 bit and Linux 64 bit. At present I don't have a 32 bit Linux installation to build and test on. :-(

The download location is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/qstripper/files/ and from there you can pick your required OS version.

In Linux, there are no support files required, just the executable. Under Windows, support files are required and there is a readme file in both Windows locations that tell you what you need.

These support files are required by Windows only. You will only need them once until I start using QT 5, which isn't available yet!

Simply, but full, instructions are to be found in the assorted readme files at the download site.

I suspect Dilwyn will also be making this available on his own web site.

Now, as to downloads. Dilwyn has already mentioned that SourceForge has the worst possible and most user unfriendly download abilities. I could tell he was impressed, however, to be a bit more serious.

Dilwyn was using, I assume, some version of IE and when he clicked on the downloads, he didn't see anything except a screen displaying grey text on a grey background with a pair of massive adverts beneath.

Next problem, there's a 5 second count down timer - to allow you time to read the adverts - and then nothing happened for a while until IE popped up the dialogue asking if he wanted to open the latest download or not.

I use Firefox and I can see the text perfectly well at the top of the screen. I tried it in IE 8 on XP 32 bit, and I can see black and blue text on a grey background.

I agree the adverts are a tad on the big side, but as SourceForge has to raise money somehow to be able to give the likes of me some (lots) of free disc space, web sites etc, I can't argue with them on that matter!

My own download using IE immediately asked me where I wanted to save the files to, Dilwyn's did not. I don't see an option in IE8 that allows me to auto save to a given location without prompting - which I do have in Firefox and I have it configured to always prompt.

I'd be interested in hearing what your downloading experiences are, if you have problems reading the screen, the ads are intrusive, no need to tell me that! And so on.

Cheers,
Norm.
