I was recalling an incident in my Rock'n'Roll days when I was on tour
with Manfred Mann. We did a show in a sports hall in Austria and then
travelled by sleeper coach straight back to the UK. At five in the
morning we were dragged out of bed by the French customs who wanted to
search us all for drugs. The last thing I did before leaving the venue
was to shower in one of those big shower rooms. My washing bag had,
inadvertently filled with water so I emptied it out and put it in a
polythene bag to deal with when I got home.

When I was searched the customs guy opened the bag. I knew it had been
full of various hotel soaps which had all melted down with all of that
water. I tried to suggest that he should not put his hand in there
but........
When he with drew it, covered in multicoloured goo, I had to try very
hard to keep a straight face. Whenever that sort of thing happens now I
remember that incident. Very Proustian and total off topic.
