Not necessarily.  I know nothing about colour inkjets, but I know all my
mono printers (HP Deskjet, Brother matrix, HP Laserjet and Brother
HL-1250) emulate printers from other manufacturers, and, of course, (as
you suggest) others from their own range.

...  so one could possibly find a core of commonly emulated printers.
