Probably because Windows comes with all sorts of standard drivers so
that many things work out of the box.

True, but that's the general issue with "WinPrinters": no own
processing power or memory. So the problem is not that Ghostscript is
particularly slow, but the rendering process is just a very demanding
one.
But after all, nothing changes for those users (still on the chase for
suitable printers) but users of more powerful platforms have one
problem less.
