Hi Peter,
What's happening probably is that the card is way too slow for your setup 
and that doesn't allow it to boot. Try to disable UDMA from the 
channel/drive the CF reader is assigned and reboot with the card inside...
Another problem could be a very long cable or the CF adapter attached to a 
ATA 66+ (80 wire) cable...
