As far as I know, a GUI is always an application that send  command line to
the OS and gives a different (distorted ccordind to TT) view of the OS
For instance, if you move a file with the mouse at the OS level you send a
COPY TO then a DELETE
That's why, usually, there is far more command and options available than
what the GUI can do 
Even under Windows

If the GUI is an application, you can choose to use the GUI, or if you
prefer command line either don't start it at all or quit from it if
you don't know how to remove it from the boot file.
