Problem gone since removing the M$ Orifice thingy from Windoze startup as suggested by Phoebus. Only happens with QL floppies (DD and HD alike) and Office 97 and Win 9x. Normally, QPC would read all DD and HD disks until you started playing with something in M$ Office then bang, no longer possible to read any QL floppies (but the PC would carry on reading DOS format floppies OK, and would handle no floppy in drive OK too).
Possibility of the Office startup files or Bios problem as suggested by Marcel. Touch wood, OK now after Phoebus's suggestion. -- Dilwyn Jones
