Yes, in fact everything is already implemented.

Furthermore I can probably now reveal that I implemented an
alternative to the bit mask. Sprites can now have a real alpha channel
and thus mix with the background (creating shadows or whatever you
want). This is true only for GD2 modes, of course.

Finally sprite data can be RLE compressed to save space.
