I know that I can play sound files on the Q40, but has anyone tried making original music. Is the SSS set up for turning the Q40 into, say, an organ? Or would this be fairly difficult?
As Marcel mentioned, the SSS has nothing to do with sound synthesis.
There are however examples from Simon Goodwin on how to do that.
The other solution (the one I opted for) is to use short samples in what is usually referred to as a "WaveTable".
The samples used have to be tuned right so there's no clicks, burps and blurts in the sound and the best solution to do so is to convert a Sample set like the one used by SoundBlaster/EMU Systems (Proteus). I am still trying to decipher their file format for the Soundblaster 512 PCI.
Mind you this will require enormous amounts of memory (given the 32 Meg constraint of the Q40 but not the Q40i), however since the sample rate and bit-resolution is lower it is manageable.
