this is a problem.
Technically it would be possible to implement some access for protected
maps, but:

- - You would need a lot of lawyers to protected yourself
- - Usage would be illegal in many countries (and for sure it would be
legally different in each single country)

It's always the same, buy some non-open stuff and the vendor will always
have ways to make your life hard...

Buy a iPhone and you can also not install what you wish on it, only what
apples thinks makes sense (for apple of course, not for you). That's why
no flashplayer exists for the iPhone for example...


I also own protected maps and I used mapsource under XP/Vista to install
them on the device. (Since the memory card is large enough I could
install the whole map on the device)
For daily usage I use QLandkarte (Tracks, Waypoints etc.) with the
openstreetmap map.

Depending on the area you live the voverage of OSM can be very good
(sometimes even better than on puchased maps) or not existent.... :(
