I have already figured out that there are less crashes in KDE. 
And you have put me into the right direction with my "polyline distance"
problem.
I simply overread that it has to be a "Garmin vector map".

I have one more question though, when qlandkartegt is started with the
"-debug" option, does it generate a logfile somewhere, or is the debug
info "just" written to the console ?
A logfile would be clever idea, because initially I have tried the
program under Gnome, but the entire X-session crashed which left me with
empty hands.
