Hi Albrecht, in fact, writing some instructions on how to configure the XML files for GDAL, so to make QLGT able to load online maps on demand is on mi TODO list, but the list is long, and growing :-)
I know, the "real life" work (i.e. the one for real money...) always delays everything... :-/
So far I have been spreading the word on QLGT in Spanish forums (see for example the next URL, if the server is not down, as it is sometimes): http://www.foromtb.com/showthread.php?741846-QLandkarteGT-Hilo-para-centralizar-dudas-experiencias-y-comentarios
Great!
Creating the XML files is easy as you have already seen, but can take some knowledge about the syntax of the WMS protocol, and some trial and error (to estimate good values for SizeX and SizeY, as too low values would give bad resolution at the highest QLGT zoom (x1), but too high ones will exercise the remote map server more than necessary, requesting tiles for resolutions that are not available, and creating unnecessary load on the remote servers, that should be treated with care.
Actually, as the GetCapabilities request shall return XML data, I think it should be possible to automatically craft a suitable GDAL input file. I am already writing a (perl) script which works more or less fine with some servers, but doesn't with others. As you said, I now have to read the specs... Anyway, it looks promising! Hope I can send something to the list soon (again the issue above...). Best, Albrecht.
