Hi Roman,

these streaming maps are pre-rendered bitmaps. As they are rendered on a
powerfull server with no time constrains, the render unit can do a much better
job as the one on your device. But, even as they look nicer, they do not
contain more information. In fact the ratio information/bytes is abyssal bad.

But anyways, newer Garmin units can display raster maps. Thus one is tempted to
create a multilevel raster map from the tiles of these servers. However this
beaks the term of use on all TMS servers. And for most non OSM maps you break
existing copyright laws, too.

That is the reason why QLGT will never actively support such a thing like TMS
to Garmin raster map format. Much damage has been done by the map leechers
already. Once free and public services start to hide behind browser plugins or
they use ticket/password mechanisms to stop users from stealing the data.
Limiting the volume or making the download awkward slow is another way to stop
copyright violations.

But as a backdoor you can render your own OSM maps on your PC and try to import
them into QLGT. Have a look at http://maperitive.net/ for example. As QLGT
supports Ozi format you might get a result quite quickly.

HTH

and thanks for the new Ubuntu binaries!

Oliver
