I am a complete NooB to QLandKarte GT, my Garmin GPS device and indeed anything map-related other than (i) what people used to buy on folded paper and (ii) extremely elementary Google Map use.
I installed QLandKarte GT (may I call it QLK?) on my computer (CrunchBang, i.e. Debian). No obvious problem there. The program starts up, with no error message. Unsurprisingly, there's no map (I'm told "no map"). The QLK's "quickstart" page at Sourceforge says that to see a map on my screen: 1. Select Map(F1) at the top of the toolview to activate the maps tab below. 2. Double click "--- OSM ---" in the maps list The first part works. The second: I don't see anything that looks like a maps list, and I don't see "--- OSM ---" anywhere. Common sense (hah!) says that I should "load" a map (File|Load map). I've tried this. First, I got Open Street Map to generate a map from a number of rectangles of Japan. After a few hours of generation, the website offered me a number of download options. I chose "openfietsmap_lite_tiles.zip (Compressed file that contains the tiles and overview map. This is useful for applications like Qlandkarte and Linux users.)" I tried loading that, but got "Failed to load file:" (nothing more specific, such as "Unknown file format:"). I looked inside for what might be an index file, tried two or three, but got the same result. A friend pointed me to http://tmz.skr.jp/data/gmap.html , where I'd find a ZIP of a single, huge IMG. I tried loading the IMG, but again got "Failed to load file:". Perhaps I'm missing something that's very obvious . . . but what? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ See everything from the browser to the database with AppDynamics Get end-to-end visibility with application monitoring from AppDynamics Isolate bottlenecks and diagnose root cause in seconds.
