The Garmin eTrex 20 can be configured for the USB port in "USB storage"
mode or in "Garmin mode". I haven't even tried to connect to it via the
"Garmin mode", as I don't really know if it supports NMEA at all (and not a
need to learn either).

My guess is newer Garmin devices will favor usage of the USB storage mode
for both upload/download of maps, waypoints, routes and tracks. It's plain
simple, compatible across all OS and doesn't need any particular support on
the side of the application.

For QLGT you may need to do the upload/download manually instead of
resorting to the program interface for it. For maps, probably you need to
export it first from QLGT to Garmin IMG format, and then copy that under
Garmin/ on either the built-in GPS memory (discouraged) or the micro USB
card (encouraged) yourself.

To the best of my knowledge, QLGT won't support any Garmin protocol
communication with devices other than those in the list anytime soon (read
it "never").

Hope this helps.
