Hi Kay,
the preceding "Q" signs that it is an application based on Qt. Thus users used
to that naming scheme have
certain expectations on how the application behaves and how portable it is.
Additionally a "Q" upfront makes the name unique in the Net. Originally I
wanted the name "MapRoom". But
it is used too commonly. Plus I had to discover that there is another project
on BitBucket with that name.
I tried a lot of other names, but the nice descriptive ones are taken. I could
come up with a pure fantasy
name. But would that help?
After a couple of days bitching around with names QMapShack became more and
more the name. There is
the "Q", there is "map" in the name and "shack" is the left over of "room". It
had no matches with all search
engines I tried. Plus it is a name that can be pronounced by anyone speaking
English.
Anyway, if you consider how far "QLandkarte" proceeded despite it's silly name,
it's not about a names, it's
about what it does and how users spread the word. Sf.net has this nice download
statistics. I could see by
that statistic every time QLGT was mentioned in a blog or a forum. The download
count is boosted and will
drop down. But the normal average will slowly increase, too.
In the beginning you can amplify that effect by releasing more frequent. But
after all, if no one is voting for
your project, writing about it in a positive way or simply relaying the
project's web page, the download count
stays low.
Anyway, luckily I do not have to make a living out of QLGT/QMS. Thus download
stats and popularity is very
secondary. For me it's more important to get things done conveniently with
Linux. Plus it's playing with
code, trying out concepts, working with maps. I loved map even as kid. Always
colorized them ;)
Thus I try to keep the fun in first place. Imho the only way to write open
source software over 8 years
without getting frustrated.
