Hi Michael,

but especially in Germany with all it's vegetation ortho maps are often
of no use.

Anyway, when I try one of those WMS maps from the collection on sf.net I
usually have to fix the definition first. And most of these servers are
slow. WMS is a CPU expensive thing. If you consider the fact that most
of our maps are now based on the ATKIS dataset you can get the same
information via the ArcGis server or WebAtlasDe. And if you really want
to know if there is a trail for sure you use OSM maps in the hope they
are not just copied from the official maps. And in my local area I get
high resolution ortho maps via TMS server. Usually if you start
searching you find alternatives with a better performance than WMS.

That said, I just implemented TMS service. This will be part of the next
release.

And regarding 3D models: Sure sometimes it's fun to see the model. But
it's quite a big chunk of code to maintain with very little benefit. As
at the end of the day every single bit of code has to be maintained by
me, I simply have to reduce that. Take 3D in QLGT. This was donated code
by Andrew Vagin. He did a good job, but lost interest at a certain
point. When 3D started to fail compilation due to changes in the library
I had to take care of it. To take care meant: writing/refacturing the
code from scratch. Plus adding features from the wish list of users. The
alternative would have been dropping the code.

Almost all larger contributions I had to take care of at a certain
point. It's much better with the smaller ones. Thus I favor dropping a
feature over opening another barrel which I have to drink myself in the
end. Right now the time is better invested in implementing important
features and writing documentation. Especially documentation is a task
everyone could easily take over, but no one is willing to do so. On the
other side everybody is demanding a documentation. As my time is limited
I have to make priorities. I am spending way too much time on that anyway ;)
