Hi John,

you use the software in a very limited and simple way. To load a *tif directly
into QLGT is more a hack to
check a single file on-the-fly. But not a way to use it with other maps on a
daily base.

Usually you get a country's maps as set of several files to keep the file size
within a technically sane value.
But you want to see all files as one map. And if you have several different
maps you want to switch
between them easily. That is why you have to tell the software what files are
part of one map. And once
you have done so, the map is registered to the left hand side list for fast
access.

Of course if your whole focus is on a single file only, this seems to be
unnecessary overhead. But most
user's expectations are not limited to such a simple point of view.

Besides if you want to attach DEM data to your map, you have register it to the
list of known maps. By that
you can get the elevation below your mouse cursor, new waypoints will get an
elevation value and so on.
So it makes sense to even embed a single file into a *qmap file.

To create a qmap file you select "Map...(F1)->Edit/Create Map (F6) -> Create
map collection..." The "?"
button will guide you with some help.

And in QMapShack the ideas behind the qmap file was split into:

1) using *vrt as *vrt is naively used by GDAL. In fact many operations of
GDAL's command line tools
perform much better on a *vrt, than passing single files to the interface or
combining all files to an insane
large one a priori.

2) selecting the zoom levels to display a map on-the-fly via GUI rather than
giving some abstract numbers
when creating the qmap file.

3) Replace different levels of resolution by other map types more appropriate.
Instead of using a 1:200K
and 1:500k map as overview to your 1:50k of 1:25k map you use a Garmin vector
map or online map
which perform much better in the outer zoom levels than raster maps.

So there is a lot more behind the software than just loading single tif files.
But if you are happy with the
way QLGT is, stick to it.
