I once had a similar idea, and while I am a fan of the Raspberry Pi (I
have two of them running as servers for many things) I found them
unsuitable for navigation and GPS logging.

First of all you need to carry around not only the Raspberry Pi itself,
but also a rather large battery as the Raspberry Pi needs a relatively
large amount of power. Also you need to make the electrical connection
between battery and Raspberry Pi very strong, as a power loss may
corrupt your memory card.

Then you need to add on a touch display and a GPS receiver, and perhaps
some other things. In the end my conclusion was that this is a nice
idea, but the implementation gets very messy very rapidly.

So I bought an Android smartphone, a Samsung GT-S7390, which has
everything I need, and has Wifi, Bluetooth and a camera as bonuses. The
apps I use most are Google Maps and Google MyTracks. Part of my contract
with my ISP is a free data-only SIMcard, so I actually use this
smartphone as a small and light tablet. I use Google Drive to transfer
the tracks to my desktop computer, where I use QLandkarteGT to
manipulate them. (Migration to QMapShack is Work In Progress. :-) )

Jeroen.
