Where do you get the offline ones from?

OTOH, the TMS files I have had for years for Google (maps, satellite,
and terrain) and Bing (satellite) have never needed changes.

I got lucky with the WMTS files, though.  I had a couple from
arcgisonline.com and decided to poke around that site.  If you look
here <https://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services> there
are a lot of useful-looking maps with links to WTMS files that you can
download and rename with wget and drop in the maps directory.
