Thanks.  It's good to get a little feedback.  It now prints:

        some problem occurred while scanning the message

into the log.

I see from the source that this means it had a problem while running the 
scanner.  conf-scancmd contains:

        /usr/bin/clamscan -r --quiet --tempdir=. .

and clamscan is where it should be:

-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        31960 Sep 13 05:53 /usr/bin/clamscan*

rts.tests still runs okay:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] src]# sh rts.tests 
Running run-cleanq as gqscanq...PASS
Running qscanq with test-virus...PASS
Running qscanq with good email...PASS
