Do I need to put qmail users (alias, qmailX) inside the
ldap directory? Or can I use passwd/shadow for it and have
only the "users" account in the LDAP?
qmail? and alias should only be local users.

I am aware that it may cause me a problem if I want to pass 65000 users (or whatever limit is now on UID number). If this happen, I am planning to split the domains and break them between machines at that point which I will have a limit of 65000 users per machine (or per domain depending on the split) which is fine for me as well. I will surely have to break the user in different LDAP as well, but this not for tomorrow and I will think about it in due time.
The only thing I am not sure of is the impact that having PAM LDAP with so many users, but for the moment, works great.
Anyway, if you have over 60,000+ users you may want to do some cleanup as you surely have lots of inactive accounts ;-)
