Hi qmail-ldap-list,
I'm multi posting this message. I already post it in qmail
list a few days ago, but I would like the qmail-ldap list opinion.
:))
I have a situation and I can't figure out what is going on,
the server suddenly "freeze". I'm sending this message looking for
advices, opinions and things that I can do to solve the "problem"
or discover how to deal with it. :)
Here is the scenario:
The server is located on a host provider. It has about 2000
mails per hour. (aprox. 1 mail -> 2 seconds). The hardware is a Dell
Machine (PowerEdge series):
2x Intel Xeon 3.0 (Hyper Threading)
3 GB (DDR 400)
2 NIC (Broadcomm NetExtreme tg3) Gigabit
SCSI Controller RAID (Perc3 2 Channels 128M Cache)
3 HDs Ultra 320 140GB
It is using RAID 5 (hardware) and LVM for /home and /var.
All filesystems are XFS. The configuration has a little "hack",
today it uses vpopmail, but the main idea is change it for LDAP.
It is a LWQ instalattion, but we use the qmail-ldap patch,
and the "hack" I mention before is just the change of checkpassword
to authenticate against vpopmail. It is not the problem, before we
do this change was the same behaviour.
The system is a Debian Woody, using qmail-scanner 1.22 and
last version of Panda Anti Virus with all updates. We are also
using SPAMassassin (pre packaged for woody).
What we cannot understand is why the machine freezes
suddenly. No messages in logs that can help, no errors in dmesg.
We try to use Clamav but it is slower than panda. qmail-scanner
seems to be one of the biggest pay load.
Before the Debian was a Red Hat, the Operating System was
very stable but qmail was completely unstable. Now we are trying
to use it on Debian, qmail is very stable, but not the OS, and
Debian *is* a very robust and Stable distro.
We already try Sarge (kernel 2.6) but Panda has some
"incompatibilities" with new threads and glibc2.3. As I heard
many times on the list, there are qmail servers with and "huge"
amount of messages, so, probably somebody could advice me. :)
Thank you in advance, best regards!
