From what I gather auth_pop follows the checkpassword interface method
so this test (I use a similar one on my vanilla qmail boxes):

printf "%s\0%s\0%s\0" user pass Y123456 | /var/qmail/bin/auth_pop id 3<&0

should run 'id' if my user and pass are correct (it's not here it's
showing user: [unprintable characters] (no such object)) in the log).

any tips for running auth_pop from command line or rother ways to trouble
shoot this particular program?
