Do a file on the perl binary i.e. :-
file /usr/bin/perl5.6.1
/usr/bin/perl5.6.1: ELF 32-bit LSB executable i386 (386 and up) Version 1,
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

If it says not stripped, the type
strip /usr/bin/perl5.6.1

(Replacing the above file for your perl instance)

99% of the time its stripped, but if not it will make it smaller and use
less memory
