Are both scanning the message with SpamAssassin? Remember that local messages (where RELAYCLIENT is set) do not get scanned by SA and therefore go thru much quicker. Could that be it? On my system its about 10 times faster if not scanned by SA.
no, these are proxy servers - mail incoming to my customer's domains goes through these then on to the delivery server. mail outbound from customers isn't scanned. so there's no RELAYCLIENT involved. everything scanned with clamdscan and spamassassin.
i was thinking it might be related to suidperl, since it's also weird that qmail-scanner never shows up in 'top', but multiple instances of 'perl5.8.3' do. but that's a longshot.
Cees Hek's comments about deltatime may be it. but i actually ran across a few messages that took in excess of 400 seconds to complete - even under the heaviest load, the longest amount of time the other servers will spend is maybe two minutes.
