I think there are just too many variations. For example, RedHat puts
the Apache config. files in /etc/httpd, even though the stock Apache
distribution puts it in /usr/local/etc/apache I think this is what Dan's
trying to avoid.
I personally don't really care whether it's in /opt, /var, or /usr.
I do like the idea of the whole package sitting in the same directory.
It guarantees that a year later I won't have little bits and pieces of
tihs package lying around if I decide to remove it.
