You missed the step in the README which says: stop sendmail, and remove the
sendmail rpm. (I am talking about the readme in the ftp dir where you got
the qmail rpm from).

--force should be used only if you know what you are doing. In this case
the two links
/usr/{lib,sbin}/sendmail -> /var/qmail/bin
would overwrite the corresponding ones of the sendmail package. The one in
/usr/sbin is the sendmail binary ...
