Something I've thought for a while but never had the
guts to say.

Why could one want a machine-parseable, sender-manipulable
bounce message? Presumeably because you want to differentiate
between bounces and you want a machine to parse the responses.

To me, that says 'Spam-checking domains for real mail addresses'...
