There's a limit to the number of copies that can be sent with each copy of the message. I think sendmail defaults to 20 and SMTP limits it to 100. And. as someone else pointed out, that bandwidth penalty only applies for messages sent to the same MX, which is typically only a fraction of mail bandwidth, which is usually only a fraction of one's network bandwidth. -Dave
