Check out /etc/profile for something like this:
/bin/mail -E
case $? in
0)
echo "You have new mail."
;;
2)
echo "You have mail."
;;
esac
Whatever is checking for mail is clearly not looking in the same
place for the user's default mailbox as qmail is.
