I never had troubles with A Records pointing to something different then
MX-Records. But I had big trouble, when I tried using a CNAME for the
domain, instead of an A record.
using:
domain.com MX 25 smtp.domain.com
domain.com CNAME www.domain.com
www.domain.com A 1.1.1.1
smtp.domain.com A 1.1.1.2
made sendmail send mails to our webserver... ;-)

well - since the problems are with the sender, using qmail for your own
mail-server doesnt help you...
