Yes, sorry for not explaining why I want to do something.
I felt that would only lead to a flame war.
(1) I don't want to modify/patch/extend qmail, for various reasons.
(2) qmail smtpd doesn't do things I'd like to do.
(3) and most imporant, I'd like to learn more about smtp inner workings
as seen on a working mail system.
