You
didn't get a 220 status banner/capabilities line when you
telnetted to the smtp port.
Something is definitely wrong.
And
whats with the > prompts? Smtpd doesn't generate
them.
I
don't think you're connected to qmail-smtpd.
May I
suggest using a cut-and-paste from the telnet window, if you
didn't?
'cause
if you did, that doesn't look like an smtp server.
